Dating in Stockholm: Everyone Is Single. So Why Is It So Hard to Meet Someone?
Stockholm is full of interesting, independent singles. So why does meeting someone genuinely compatible feel so difficult? We look at what’s changing in Swedish dating culture, why more singles are craving real-life connection, and how No.36 is creating a different way to meet.

Stockholm should be a great city to be single in.
It is full of interesting, ambitious, independent people. There are restaurants, bars, cultural events, beautiful neighbourhoods and seemingly endless opportunities to meet someone.
And yet, ask enough single people in Stockholm about dating and a familiar frustration emerges:
Where do you actually meet someone?
Not another profile.
Not another conversation that disappears after three messages.
Not someone who is technically single but emotionally somewhere else.
Someone you are genuinely interested in, who is genuinely interested in you — and who is looking for the same thing.
That has become surprisingly difficult.
Sweden is beginning to fall out of love with online dating
The numbers suggest this frustration is bigger than anecdotal conversations between friends.
According to Svenskarna och internet 2025, only 18% of Swedish singles said they had dated online during the previous year, compared with 27% in 2022.
Among singles aged 16–34, online dating fell from 43% to 25% over the same period.
Perhaps even more revealing is where Swedish singles would rather meet.
55% of singles said they prefer making first contact with a potential partner offline.
Even among people who currently use online dating, 49% said they prefer first contact to happen offline.
We haven't lost interest in meeting someone.
We may simply be losing interest in how we're being asked to do it.
The Stockholm paradox
There is a particular contradiction to dating in a city like Stockholm.
You can be surrounded by people and still struggle to meet anyone new.
Your life becomes established.
You have your friends. Your colleagues. Your favourite restaurant. Your gym. Your neighbourhood. Your routines.
The same people begin circulating through the same social worlds.
And Swedish social culture can make breaking into those worlds feel difficult.
Approaching a stranger in everyday life isn't always the most natural interaction. One Swedish study of long-term involuntary singles found participants describing attempts to approach people offline as something that can be perceived as unusual, even while more singles are moving away from dating apps.
So we arrive at an odd situation.
People want to meet organically.
But the environments in which organic introductions naturally happen have become harder to find.
Then there are the apps
Dating apps solved one problem brilliantly:
Access.
Suddenly, you could discover people you would never otherwise have met.
But access created another problem.
Too much choice, with too little context.
A photograph.
A job title.
A few carefully chosen prompts.
Swipe.
Match.
Message.
Repeat.
You can know someone's height before knowing how they make you feel.
You can know their favourite destination before discovering whether they listen when you speak.
And you can spend weeks talking before discovering the most important thing:
you weren't looking for the same kind of relationship.
Recent Swedish research also points to very different experiences for men and women on dating platforms, particularly around the amount of attention and responses each receives.
The experience may differ.
The frustration can exist on both sides.
Swedish singles aren't necessarily asking for more choice
Perhaps they're asking for better circumstances.
This is where No.36 begins.
We built No.36 around a simple observation:
Stockholm doesn't need another way to browse singles. It needs better ways for singles to actually meet.
No.36 is a private members club for relationship-minded singles.
We bring together people who are open to meeting someone and create the circumstances for those meetings to happen naturally.
Not through endless swiping.
Through real rooms, real conversations and real introductions.
We curate the room. Not the chemistry.
This distinction matters.
No.36 cannot tell you who you will fall for.
We don't believe anyone can.
Attraction is unpredictable.
Someone you might have overlooked in an app could become completely different when they're sitting across from you.
Their humour.
Their voice.
The way they hold a conversation.
The question they ask after everyone else would have changed the subject.
The way you feel around them.
Those things are difficult to reduce to a profile.
So rather than trying to manufacture chemistry, we create better conditions for chemistry to occur.
We consider who enters the No.36 community.
Members create a Chemistry Profile that helps us understand who they are, what matters to them and what they are looking for.
And then we bring people into real life.
A dinner is allowed to just be a dinner
This may be one of the most important parts.
Not every interaction needs the pressure of:
Is this my person?
At a No.36 experience, you might attend a private dinner, a tasting, an intimate gathering or another carefully considered experience.
There may be someone in the room who catches your attention.
There may not.
You might make a new friend.
You might meet someone you'd like to see again.
Or you might simply have an excellent evening surrounded by interesting people who happen to be single too.
That takes some of the transactional feeling out of dating.
Instead of sitting opposite one stranger knowing you both have to decide whether there will be a second date, you meet within a social environment.
Conversation can happen before expectation does.
And sometimes, we make the introduction
The social side is only one part of No.36.
Through our Chemistry Profiles and human review, we can also identify people we believe may be worth introducing.
Not because an algorithm has declared them compatible.
Because there is enough alignment for us to think:
These two should meet.
Then chemistry gets the final say.
Because ultimately, one considered introduction can be more valuable than another hundred profiles.
Stockholm doesn't have a shortage of interesting singles
It has a connection problem.
The people are here.
What has been missing are enough environments designed to bring them together intentionally, without turning every interaction into another digital transaction.
Swedish singles are already telling us they want more of their romantic lives to happen offline.
No.36 is our answer to that.
A private world built around introductions, experiences, community and the possibility of meeting someone you might never have found otherwise.
Because perhaps the future of dating in Stockholm doesn't need to be more digital.
Perhaps it needs to become more human again.
